Morning Musume – All Single Coupling Collection Album

This is the review of Morning Musume’s Coupling Collection album, which features every coupling (or B-side as it is also known) song from all of their 40 singles. I managed to get a Limited edition which apart from having the album also features a mini photobook with pictures about Morning Musume’s history (pics of all of the members, information about the singles, etc.).

I ordered the album mainly because of the photobook, but also to accompany my Best Of album (which features all of Morning Musume’s A-sides) so I can finally have all of their songs.

Like most reviews I will start by unboxing the album and then I will review as thoroughly as I can the entire contents, which in this case include the album itself and the mini PB. Since this is a collection which features more than 40 songs I will try to restrain myself from going on and on about a song and write a few sentences on each song.

Since most of you have read my other Morning Musume reviews then you probably know what I think of each of the present members voices (basically I like all of their singing voices, although Ai-chan, Lin Lin, Reina, Kamei and Niigaki’s voices are slightly better than the others) so I won’t go into much detail about the voices and focus solely on the song itself.

So starting the review, the album itself came in a standard CDJapan brown box, and since the album is bigger than a single the box was also slightly bigger to accommodate the size.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0586

The box has a slightly noticeable wrinkle on the corner, which was probably caused by the post office dropping it. Apart from that small wrinkle the box was in perfect condition, which is always great news.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0588

Inside the box there was a bunch of crumbled up paper, both on top and on the bottom, of the album which was in a bubble wrap sleeve, and even though this isn’t the best way to protect a $40 album it is slightly better looking than YesAsia’s bubble wrap ball.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0589

After throwing aside the box with the crumbled up paper I finally came upon the album in CDJapan’s typical bubble wrap sleeve, which is great for protection of the CD’s but it’s also great since it is one of the easiest ways to get the album out fast since the only thing keeping the sleeve closed is two pieces of tape.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0591

I finally unpacked the album and I was greeted by the album cover, and even though I like most of the members I have to admit that the cover idea was great, but it didn’t come out as great as I expected.

We all know that when we see pictures of ourselves as kids it is always awkward since we look really different than what we look now, and for this cover the same holds true since most of the members look really different than what they look like today.

For example the Rokkies (Kame, Sayu, and Reina minus Fujimoto) have the same expression they had when they did the Mecha Mecha Iketeru special: somewhat shy and nervous.

Apart from that I really liked the idea since it reminds us of the members when they first joined and how they drastically changed to become the idols that we now know today.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0599

As you can notice the lines seem to be drawn in, which was a great idea since it looks like someone got all of  the pictures of the members and took their time placing them into the squares.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0601

The back cover on the other hand shows the current Momusu (current when it was released) where all of the members are wearing more modern clothes and doing more creative poses, which shows the fans that Momusu has a lot of history (front cover) but it also has a lot of youth and energy (back cover).

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0603

Here is the spine of the album and as you can tell it is big, since it holds the PB and the album with all of the B-sides of the 40 singles from Momusu.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0607

And the reason for the big size is noticeable when you turn it around since you can clearly see the PB and the 3-CD album (the size of 3 normal singles), which take up a lot of space.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0608

After removing the packaging I finally got a chance to see the back cover better, and I have to admit that the costumes look great on the girls. Sure, the theme isn’t the most creative (6 of them have caps on their hips) but I like how the group looks young and full of energy (most of the energy from Lin Lin).

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0609

Here are all of the contents with the album box on the top and the album itself and the PB on the bottom and instantly you can notice the difference between the album and the album box since all of the members look older (and with different colored hair) and also because they reversed the colors used (red background and white letters for the box and white background and red letters for the album).

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0611

Like the normal version of the album all of the members are wearing the costume of the last single they performed (with the current Momusu in the costumes for promotion of the album), such as Yossie in the Kanashimi Twilight costume and Ishikawa in the Osaka Koi no Uta costume.

In my opinion this cover is better than the other since it gives us a better chance at seeing how the girls looked like when they were older (although Risa’s picture looks noticeably fuller than the others because of her puffed up hair), and also because we can actually see the girls with the many costumes they have used for their singles.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0614

The back of the album features the same picture that the box has on its back although the girls now have a red string going around them which seems to connect them together. It would have slightly better to have the picture on its side since it would have filled the white space better, but it came out great nonetheless since it has a somewhat simple but elegant look.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0615

When you open the album you are greeted by a red CD and a pamphlet with the same picture as the album cover.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0620

The red CD has “DISC 1” on the threads which seem to wrap around the CD and write the letters on it (including the giant “B” in the middle). I really liked how the CD looks since it continues the thread theme of the album where everything seems to be connected together.

It’s also great that they wrote Morning Musume in cursive since it makes the thread seem like it was stitched on instead of just written on.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0621

The pamphlet has the same picture as the cover, but it isn’t that big of a surprise since most of the single’s pamphlets also serve as the cover.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0623

Here are the other two CDs which have the same theme as the first CD but with two distinctly different colors.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0625

The 2nd CD has a blue background instead of the red background the album has, and even though the color blue isn’t anywhere else in the album it was probably used instead of a white background since white would have looked like an ordinary printable CD.

For the most part the color looks great since it mixes in well with the theme and it makes the CD shiny, as well as making the letters easy to understand.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0633

The 3rd cover on the other hand seems to be where they ran out of ideas since they used red for everything. The letters are still noticeable when you are holding the CD but it doesn’t show up well when you take a picture of it.

1All Single Coupling Collection Review 0637

Behind the 3rd CD is standard info about the people who made the album and even though there isn’t much to show it is still great to see that they followed the curve of the CD and the red letter theme of the album.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0639

The pamphlet contains the lyrics to the songs in a somewhat predictable red letters, the only thing that stood out is how they continued the “thread” theme by having the titles connected by a single thread.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0640

Apart from the lyrics there was an application card for the release event of the album, and even though it isn’t of much use to me (since I live in the US and it’s 2 months after the event) it is great to have.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0641

The only other notable picture in the pamphlet was the middle since it has a picture of all of the members with Morning Musume in red letters on top. The picture gives us a better chance to see all of the members and the picture cutout theme they will use for the PB that is included.

For the most part I like how it looks since it gives it a scrap book look since all of the member’s picture seem to be glued onto the paper instead of printed.

After putting down the album I took a better look at the thing that most interested me which was the mini PB:

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0642

The cover has a red background and the book itself feels like a real scrap book since it has a hard cover, which is a great thing for fans since it gives it a feeling that it is an actual book.

Since the book was hard covered I had to use the box to keep the pages open since I didn’t want to damage the spine, so for the rest of the pictures you will notice the box on top of the PB.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0643

The first pages have “THE STORY OF MORNING MUSUME.” in thread, which was a great idea since it gives the PB a story book feeling.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0644

The next pages had the first picture of the PB with the current Momusu under more thread letters which say “WHO SANG SIDE-B? LET’S FIND OUT!!”. I like how they had the members look confused since it actually looks like they are being asked the question, although Sayu looks like she is scared, Risa looks like she already knows and Jun Jun looks scared at the red thread.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0645

The first member after the question is, not surprisingly, the current leader Takahashi Ai with her name written in Romaji. I have to admit that Ai-chan’s looks amazing on this picture, and since it is an entire page with a close-up of her it makes her stand out even more.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0647

The following pages have a picture of Ai-chan from far away (which is the picture they used for the back cover of the album box) wrapped in red thread and another close-up of Ai-chan with her pinky out (like Momo) wrapped in thread.

Ai-chan’s costume was one of the few which stood out for me since it looks great on her and also because it looks more casual than the costumes we are used to seeing her in.

The rest of the members have the same pattern with their name written in Romaji on one page and a picture of them on the other, and two extra pictures of them on the two following pages.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0649

Next up is Gaki’s san with a great picture of her with her hands together, and even though her hair was puffed up more than usual it is great to see that she still looks cute as always.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0650

Gaki-san’s picture on the left is different than Ai-chan’s since she is just sitting down looking at us with her back turned to us while a red thread wraps around her. The picture on the right is a great picture of Gaki since she looks like she actually has a thread wrapped around her pinky, and also because she looks as cute as always (completely biased Gaki fan).

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0654

Although I have no idea what Ai-chan and Gaki-san are doing standing up with cardboard cutouts of Fukuda, Abe, Iida, Nakazawa and Aya on a train made out of red thread it is a fun way to include the older members in the PB as well.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0657

After the train picture we return with the members and this time we have Kame-san with a great picture of her in a woven hat.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0658

The picture they used for the left is the same picture they used for the back of the album box, and like the rest of the girls a red thread goes around her and her pinky on the other page. Kame’s costume was somewhat strange since she has a cowboy vest with really colorful pants, but like always her great smile and her cute personality are noticeable.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0659

Sayu is next and even though the she looks great in all of her pictures I have to admit that the picture could have been better if she had taken the hat off since it seems to obscure her face a bit.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0663

The left page features Sayu with her back to us and like all of the picture the right side features a great close-up with her pinky wrapped in thread. Sayu’s costume was somewhat strange since she has rain boots, a pink leopard patterned hat and a belt over her shirt, but despite that she looks cute as always.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0664

Like Ai-chan and Gaki there is a page where they appear with cutouts of the older members, this time on a bridge where Kame and Sayu are cutely sitting on a bridge while Yaguchi, Ichii and Yasuda seem to stand on the background about to push them off.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0669

The next member up is Tanaka, and even though I’m not that big of a Tanaka fan I have to admit that she looks impressing in her close-up.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0670

The left side has a picture of Reina in a somewhat Yankee pose wrapped in thread while the right picture has a closeup of her with her pinky wrapped in thread like the others. Tanaka’s costume also looks great on her since the purple color really fits her well and even though the bracelet looks like one from Berryz Koubou’s ~Medichitai~ concert tour costume’s the overall costume looks cute on Reina.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0671

The next member up is the now ex-7th generation member Koha, and like always her pictures have a feeling of genki-ness which stand out from among the others.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0672

The left page has a slightly sexy picture of Koha with her hand on her hip while a red thread goes around her and unto one of her two raised pinky’s on the other side. Koha’s costume looks great as well since it is basically a shirt with some jeans which make the overall picture look more casual.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0673

The next picture confused and slightly frightened me since it has Koha and Reina with their heads outside of an airplane which is headed straight into Goto who is floating on some balloons. And while I wonder why Goto would put on 6 balloons and float away I have to admit that the picture came out great since it is creative.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0677

The next member is Mitsui who apart from showing us her impressing collarbone shows us her nice green costume. Although it would have been great to see  a picture of Mitsui where she is smiling she still comes out cute like always.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0678

The left picture has Mitsui in a similar pose as Sayu since she is lifting up her leg slightly while a red thread goes around her to the right side of the page where it wraps itself around her pinky. Her costume looks cute, especially the green shirt with the red glasses, although the coveralls look somewhat weird.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0680

Next is Jun Jun who is one of the few members who has a picture of her with her hand up to her face, and she looks cute like always although for some reason her cheeks look a bit chubbier than usual.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0681

Like most of the other members the left picture features Jun Jun sitting down, although she isn’t looking at the camera and instead is looking up at what I assume is a light in the studio. Nonetheless the red thread wraps around her and unto her outstretched pinky on the right page, where she smiles at the camera while pretending to not notice the thread.

I really liked her costume mostly because it looks more youthful than the others, and also because of the pink and black colors which look great on her.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0685

The last member of the current Momusu is Lin Lin who, like Jun Jun, has her hand up to her face where she casually smiles at us.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0687

Knowing Lin Lin it was somewhat expected of her to do a pose that stood out and she didn’t disappoint since she was the only one to do a pose where she is outstretched while looking at the camera and although her right picture looks a bit like she is bored she still comes out cute.

Her costume looks a bit more casual than the others since it looks like it is only a shirt with a small gold tie on, but I like the addition of the black gloves since it makes her stand out more.

The theme of having a red thread go around their pinky was a great idea (and losely based on Momo because of the pinky) since it shows the unity that the current Momusu had for each other since they are all connected through a red thread which here probably symbolizes their friendship.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0688

In this picture Jun Jun and Mitsui seem to be distracted looking at seagulls while Ishikawa, Yossie, Tsuji and Kago seem to have stealthily climbed aboard and are about to push poor Lin Lin into the water to overtake the S.S. Red Thread.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0691

Since all of the current members were already mentioned we get a chance to see all of the members interact with the rest of the Momusu OG’s in red thread world. Here we get a chance to see Ai-chan calling to Gaki, Kame and Sayu to jump from the rocks to her.

Although Kame is busy preparing to collide with Risa and Sayu is in the process of beginning to slip, only Lin Lin notices that poor Makoto and Konkon are drifting away in a raft and all that she can do is point and gasp.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0696

Here we see Mitsui, Jun Jun and Koha struggling to push Reina and Miki on a wagon which is somewhat weird since Reina is somewhat skinny and Miki is made of cardboard.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0698

The following picture features all of the members that were in Momusu getting together for a group picture, and even though Iida has her “Nee Waratte” expression the picture came out great since it shows the unity that Momusu has.

It would have been great to join all of the members together to take a picture together but I guess the cutouts also work since the main point is to show all of Momusu’s history in two pages.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0703

The following pictures have pictures of all of the members of Momusu in the costume of their last single (basically the whole picture of the album cover) along with some basic information about them inside a red thread bubble which runs along the top.

Here Nakazawa is in the extremely fluffy costume of Renai Revolution 21 which was her last single before she graduated as leader of Momusu.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0705

For example here is Nakazawa’s name in Kanji along with her birth date and what looks like the place of her birth.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0708

Iida is in the The Manpower costume which looks great on her, and Abe is in the costume for Ai Araba IT’S ALL RIGHT.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0709

Ishiguro Aya is next and here she appears in the costume for LOVE Machine, and to end the first generation of Morning Musume next is Fukuda Asuka who was one of the first members who graduated so her picture is from Morning Musume’s 4th single Memory Seishun no Hikari.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0716

Next is Yasuda Kei who appears to be wearing the costume for AS FOR ONE DAY along with Yaguchi Mari who is wearing the costume for Osaka Koi no Uta.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0719

The final member of the 2nd generation is Ichii Sayaka who is wearing the costume for Happy Summer Wedding, and following as the only 3rd generation member is Goto Maki who is wearing the costume for Do It! Now.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0721

Starting the 4th generation is Ishikawa Rika who is wearing the costume for Osaka Koi no Uta and Yoshizawa Hitomi who is wearing the costume for Kanashimi Twilight.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0722

Tsuji Nozomi and Kago Ai, also known as the Two Top, conclude the 4th generation wearing the costumes for Joshi Kashimashi Monogatari.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0724

Takahashi Ai starts the 5th generation and here she is wearing the costume to promote the album, on the other side is Konno Asami who is wearing the costume for Ambitious! Yashinteki de Ii Jan.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0725

Next is Ogawa Makoto who, like Konno, is wearing the costume for Ambitious! Yashinteki de Ii Jan and Niigaki Risa, like Ai-chan is wearing the costume for the promotion of the album.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0727

Starting the 6th generation is Fujimoto Miki who is wearing the Kanashimi Twilight costume, and on the right side is Kamei Eri wearing the costume for the promotion of the album.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0728

Michishige Sayumi and Tanaka Reina conclude the 6th generation and like Kamei they are wearing the costume for the promotion of the album.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0730

Kusumi Koharu is the only member of the 7th generation so she appears by herself, Mitsui Aika on the other hand is the first member of the 8th generation.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0732

Jun Jun and Lin Lin conclude the 8th generation and like the rest of the current Momusu they are wearing the costumes for the album promotion.

This section was a great addition since it features each of the members along with some info about them and it also serves another purpose since it makes for a great autograph section since each member appears in their own page with enough white space on their side for a signature.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0734

The following pictures show the current Momusu holding each other while they smile at the camera, and even though these pages were most likely added as a filler it was a great idea since it shows the unity all of the members have for each other.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0740

These two pictures are sort of a collage with picture of the photo shoot of the album where we get a chance to see the members having fun. These pictures are among my favorite from the PB since it gives us a good view of the girls and their strong bond as friends.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0741

The following section is a small time line with the pictures of the different generations that shows us when they joined and left the group and even though it only features that information it is a great thing to have for reference.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0743

It is somewhat impressing that all of Momusu’s history can be reduced to 4 pages but it is just a brief picture of the history that spans more than a decade of one of Japan’s best idol groups.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0749

One of the final sections features the covers of all of the singles Momusu has released along with some basic information such as title, c/w title and release date.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0752

As you can see the c/w’s are named first with the A-side underneath it with an “A” on its side.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0754

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0756

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0757

After the covers of all of their singles we get a brief list of the members who were in Momusu in “Engrish”, and this page actually connects with the one below, but I took separate pictures so that the names would come out clearly.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0759

Like we all know the list above is wrong since one of the member’s, specifically Kusumi Koharu, has already left and become one of the “Members Were” and even though she isn’t one of the “Members Are” she will always continue to be a member of the group history.

All Single Coupling Collection Review 0760

After the last page is the end of the back where we get a chance to see the thread that joins all of the members together run along two times the back of the cover with the “Zetima” logo on the bottom.

The PB is definitely a must have as a fan since it gives us a chance to look at the members and all of the first 40 singles from Momusu in a single glance.

The album and PB are probably some of my most treasured Momusu possessions and I strongly encourage everyone that can purchase a Limited edition of the album, which is still available in some places since the PB itself is worth the album price (YesAsia has the Korean version which isn’t that different from the Japan Version).

The album contains all of the B-sides from all of Morning Musume’s singles released at the time (42 songs on 3 discs from 40 singles), so this will probably be among my longest reviews I have done.

Like the normal singles I listen to the song and then write what I think about it while I listen, so I apologize before hand since some parts might not make that much sense or might sound repeated.

Since there are 42 songs I will only listen to them once, although I have already listened to most of them from concert performances.

CD 1

01 Morning Coffee – Ai no Tane

This song was released earlier, but when they debuted it was released as the B-side to their 1st single.

For the most part the song is what we expect to hear from early Jpop, a somewhat upbeat ballad where all of the members sing and get a chance to sing a solo line.

The beat is calm and comforting and the vocals of the members complement the song well.

blankbar

02 Summer Night Town A MEMORY OF SUMMER ’98

The song starts with a great violin intro and it continues with the same ballad feeling throughout the song. While I do like some ballads I have to admit that this song was a bit to slow for my taste.

One thing I did like is that all of the members got to sing and also that the instrumental is relatively clean since it only features a few instruments.

blankbar

03 Daite HOLD ON METatoeba

The song starts off with a great guitar intro and it features a somewhat slow but catchy beat which is heard throughout the song.

The harmonies in the song sounded perfect, and I like how the voices sounded a bit unprocessed since it gave it a live performance sound.

For the most part the song is a bit too slow for me, although I have to admit that the Sha-la-la-la parts are somewhat catchy.

blankbar

04 Memory Seishun no HikariHappy Night/Never Forget

The intro for Happy Night is more upbeat and happy sounding than their previous singles which is somewhat surprising.

The song is uptempo and with the great voices of the girls it turns out to be a unique but impressing song.

Never Forget on the other hand is an upbeat ballad which is one of the few, if not the only, song made especially for a graduation since it featured Fukuda Asuka singing alone throughout the entire song.

As for the sound I really like the beat and the feeling of the song since it gives us a reminder of the first generation of Morning Musume and the sound of that time.

blankbar

05 Manatsu no Kousen – Koi no Shihatsu no Ressha

The laughs at the beginning add a bit of variety to the happy intro, even though it somewhat contrasts against the calm ballad sound that the overall song has.

The song seemed a bit too repetitive to me since most of the instrumental seems to repeat itself, but I like how the girl’s voices go well with the sweet emotional ballad.

blankbar

06 Furusato – Wasurerenai

The song is one of Morning Musume’s first hip-hop + ballad b-sides, and even though the sound was a bit contrasting it fit well after a few listens.

The sound is a bit heavier than the other songs, which is a great step in Momusu’s musical direction at that time since it gave them an image of a group that can try different styles.

Although I’m not a hip hop fan I have to admit that the small intro was unexpected and it kept me listening to the song.

blankbar

07 Love MACHINE – 21seiki

The song highly contrasts with the A-side, since it is somewhat empty for the first part of the song, but I like how they added the hand claps in since it gave the song a unique sound.

The song has a calm sound like the other early songs from Momusu, although I like how they went for simple instead of going for a complicated instrumental.

blankbar

blankbar

08 Koi no Dance Site – Koi wa Rock n’ Roll

The song almost sounds a bit like it was made for Mini Moni during the intro, but the beat sound almost seems to be a bit repetitive since it is used throughout the song.

I like how the voices speed up a bit with the instrumental, although the hand claps and the police siren are a bit strange.

The song for the most part seems to be nothing much other than a filler since it doesn’t sound like they spent much time on it, because of the somewhat repetitive instrumental, although the voices are interesting to hear.

blankbar

09 Happy Summer Wedding – Tsuugaku Ressha

The song sounds a bit like salsa during the intro, although I like how they added a bit of harder beat after the calm intro.

Apart from the somewhat calm instrumental I like how most of the members get a chance to sing throughout the song.

I like the calm sound although it feels a bit too “empty” for me, which might be due to the lack of a bass in the intrumental, although I like how they added the Spanish guitar sound.

blankbar

10 I WISH – Akogare MY BOY

The song starts with a bit of background talking and then starts with a somewhat calm R&B sound. The song is happy and, for the most part, interesting to hear although some parts of the intrumentals seem to be added randomly.

I like the vocals and how the song sped up a bit during the 2nd half with a bit of echo during the singing, but the song seems a bit too empty for me.

blankbar

11 Renai Revolution 21 – Inspiration!

The vocals in this song sound a bit heavier than the previous and they also have a bit more harmonization.

The instrumental does a good job of filling in the empty spots of the song, and I like how the trumpets and the drum add a bit of feeling to the song.

Overall I like the sound of the song, although the instrumental sounds too repetitive for my taste.

blankbar

12 The Peace! – Dekkai Uchu ni Ai ga Aru

This song is among my favorite of the B-sides, and this is due mostly to the happy feeling the song has and also because of the catchy intro.

The vocals after the chorus do a good job of keeping the sound and feeling of the song alive throughout the almost 6 minutes of song.

I like how they added the voices of the girls laughing and celebrating since it gives the song a bit more of feeling, something which the instrumental does well also since it follows the song throughout the highs and lows.

blankbar

13 Mr. Moonlight ~Ai no Big Band~ – Popcorn Love

The song has a happy feeling during the intro which is mixed along with the trumpet, although it seems to calm down a bit after.

The overall sound of the song is a bit too calm for me, although everyone has solo lines where they can show the fans their talent.

CD 2

14 Souda! We’re ALIVE – Morning Coffee (2002 version)

The song is basically the song Morning Coffee with new vocals and a somewhat more fuller instrumental, which is great but it somehow seems to be a filler song.

The song follows the same calm ballad sound of the original song although this time it features 12 members instead of the original 5, and I have to admit that they do a good job of singing.

Overall this song is basically a filler for the single since it is just the song with updated vocals and instrumental, but as far as its sound it is impressing.

blankbar

15 Do It! Now – Chotto Ikashita PURE BOY

The song’s instrumental seems to be a bit more tropical in sound because of the whistles, trumpets, and drums, which is great since it gives Morning Musume a bit more refreshing image.

The song has a calm happy tropical feeling which came out better than expected, and I like how the bridge of the song has speeds up then slows down when the singing starts again.

Overall impressing song, mostly because of the instrumental, although the singing is great as well.

blankbar

16 Koko ni Iruzee! – Jun Lover

The song is a ballad with a somewhat upbeat feeling, and as far as songs go it is basically a simple song with a calm beat and calm singing.

Overall the song was a great b-side since it is a great song, but it seems to be more generic than unique because of the sound of the instrumental and the beat.

blankbar

17 Morning Musume no Hyokkori no HyoutanjimaHousekibako

The song has somewhat of a calm R&B sound to it, although the song, like the A-side, seems to be happy and upbeat.

The vocals for the song were great and I like how most of the voices are backed by others since it gives the song a bit more of a full feeling.

Overall the song is not that impressing since it seems to be a filler song, although it does have some parts during the song where it sounds catchy.

blankbar

18 AS FOR ONE DAY – Never Forget (Rock Version)

Another song in the list of “updated versions” which features the same basic structure, although this time it is accompanied by drums and guitars.

I have to admit that the song sounds a bit better because of the full instrumental sound and the chorus which does a good job of backing up the main vocals.

Overall the song is as impressing as the original version, although this time the guitars add a bit of extra feeling to the song.

blankbar

19 Shabondama – Namida ni wa Shitakunai

The instrumental for the song needs a bit more instruments since it is basically a synthesizer with some drums.

The vocals of the song on the other hand feature a different singer for each line which give it a somewhat unique sound, and I like how they add some spoken parts which do a good job of adding variety.

Overall a bit too calm for my taste, but it does have a happy ballad sound which is catchy during some parts.

20 Go Girl ~Koi no Victory~ – Koi ING

The song is basically a ballad, but I have to admit that it does a good job of showing of the talent that everyone has during the group lines and even though only 3 of the 15 members get solo lines I was very impressed with their ability to sing their lines perfectly.

The ballad does have a somewhat happy feeling, although most of the song is calm.

Overall I was impressed since I usually don’t like ballads but I guess I have to do an exception since the feeling of the song and the rhythm interact nicely.

blankbar

21 Ai Araba IT’S ALL RIGHTDekiru Onna

The song is unique since the start is basically a guitar with the girls singing, but eventually a drum and piano join in later on.

The sound is a bit boring during some parts although I have to admit that the instrumental does a good job of combining with the girls voices to make a great heavy ballad.

Overall I liked the instrumental a bit better than the lyrics, mostly because the lyrics seem to have been done in a hurry, especially near the end where it seems that Tsunku lost inspiration.

blankbar

22 Roman ~MY DEAR BOY~ – Fine Emotion

The song starts with a catchy upbeat instrumental, and the overall song is great although Tsunku’s voice seems to be a bit too much during some parts.

It is basically a ballad, although the addition of the drums and the guitar do a good job of making the A and B-side go well together.

blankbar

23 Joshi Kashimashi Monogatari – Ganbare Nippon Soccer Fight!

The instrumental of the song sounds like it was made a bit too fast since it seems to lack a bit of bass and overall fullness, but I like how they added the whistle during some parts of the instrumental.

Overall it is a basic song with a soccer inspired instrumental, and even though the song sounds great it lacks a bit of emotion since the girls sound a bit bored during some parts.

blankbar

24 Namida ga Tomaranai no Houkago – “Nebou Desu. Date na no ni…”

Like the A-side the song is a ballad, although this time there is more of an R&B sound to the song.

Overall the song is calm and follows the same pattern throughout, although one thing that I liked are the vocals which sounded better than usual in some parts.

blankbar

25 The MANPOWER – Love & Peace! Hero ga Yattekita

Another favorite of mine, this song has a fast beat which combines well with the voices of the girls.

Overall the feeling of the song is happier and the instrumental combines drums, guitars, and synthesizers well to make an impressing upbeat song.

blankbar

26 Osaka Koi no Uta – NATURE IS GOOD!

The song has a somewhat generic feeling, but I like how the vocals sound since the girl’s voices are a bit harsher than usual.

The instrumental is calm although I like how the drum and the addition of the girls speaking and saying “Wow” and “Woo” add a bit more feeling to the song (especially the last “Woo hoo”).

blankbar

27 Iroppoi Jirettai – Ai to Taiyou ni Tsutsumarete

I can see this song being played at coffee shops simply because of the smooth calm sound it has, although the instrumental almost makes the song sound a bit like a kid’s song during some parts.

Overall it is a calm ballad song which is great for filling a single, but not that great for performances since it seems to lack feeling.

CD 3

28 Chokkan 2 ~Nogashita Sakana wa Ookiizo!~ – Koi wa Hassou Do The Hustle!

This is the infamous song which was supposed to be the A-side but later was switched since it was recieved poorly during test previews.

Since it was switched at the last minute there was already a PV made for it:

For the most part I have to agree with them since Chokkan 2 seems to have a far more catchier sound, although this song is still impressing.

blankbar

29 SEXY BOY ~Soyokaze no Yorisotte~ – Chance Chance Boogie

Like the name suggests the song has an upbeat sound, although it seems that the sound is a bit too happy during some parts.

The instrumental seems a bit too empty, although the amount of vocals and chorus does a good job of filling in the empty spots.

Overall an impressing song which seems like fun to perform at concerts but apart from that not much else.

blankbar

30 Ambitious! Yashinteki de Ii Jan – Watashi ga Tsuiteru

A basic ballad which has some upbeat parts, although the sound in general sounds too calm and generic for me.

There is a part during the chorus where the girls do “Woo” and “Yeah” which help the song sound a bit more upbeat though.

blankbar

31 Aruiteru – Odore! Morning Curry

Another of my favorites which has been performed a lot of time during concerts, and with good reason since it has a fun sound.

The instrumental is unique since it seems to be a combination of various instruments, among them many Indian instruments and synthesizer’s.

Overall a fun and impressing song which is great for concerts because of its happy and unique sound.

blankbar

32 Egao YES Nude – Sayonara no Kawari ni

This song has been used a lot of time’s during DVD’s, mostly in the Alo-Hello’s when the montage occurs.

The song has a calm but somewhat upbeat sound to it which overall sounds great since most of the members get a chance to sing and show of their talent.

blankbar

33 Kanashimi Twilight – Hand Made CITY

This song is different than the others because of its somewhat hard techno feeling where the girls (and Tsunku) sing along during the intro.

The rest of the song is somewhat generic although the strong instrumental does a good job of giving it a unique feeling.

Overall a great song which is worth a listen because of its great techno sound.

blankbar

34 Onna ni Sachi Are – Please! Jiyuu no Tobira

The song starts of with fast paced vocals and guitars which do a good job of going along with the song since it gives it somewhat of a rock sound.

Most of the girls get many chances to sing a solo line, and overall their voices mix in well which as a result gives the song more feeling.

Overall the song is worth a listen since the harmonies are some of the best I have heard among their B-sides.

blankbar

35 Mikan – Bon Kyu! Bon Kyu! Bomb Girl

The song follows a happy jazz sound which somewhat sound a bit like Mr. Moonlight, but it does have a unique sound because of the girls happy voices mixed in with”Woo” and “Yeah”s.

Overall the song is worth a listen because of its happy sound.

blankbar

36 Resonant Blue – Sono Bamen de Bibiccha Ikenai Jan!

Another of my favorite B-sides, this mostly because the song has a great instrumental.

All of the girls get a solo line where they can show of their vocals skills, and even though the entire song sounds great, the chorus came out perfect since it mixes well with the instrumental (especially the bells).

Overall a highly recommendable song for fans of Momusu.

blankbar

37 Pepper Keibu – Romance

This song does a good job of following the cover theme because of the impressing sound which somewhat reminds me of earlier instrumentals to some older Jpop songs.

Overall a great sounding song, although it somewhat sounds a bit like it was just added to the single at the last second which possibly means we won’t get a chance to hear it in future concerts.

blankbar

38 Nai Chau Kamo – Yowamushi

This song is unofficially the theme for this site, which is mostly due to it being a duet between Niigaki and Sayu.

The sound of the song is impressing since Niigaki’s professional vocal skills mixed in with Sayu’s unique voice make for a highly interesting song.

Niigaki sings the first part of the song where she does her own chorus, and Sayu does the second part where she also does her chorus, but the last part of the song features them both singing at the same time which makes the song sound amazing since Niigaki’s voice mixes in well with Sayu’s high voice.

Overall recommended for everyone since it has a great duet with an interesting beat.

blankbar

39 Shouganai Yume Oibito – 3,2,1 BREAKIN’ OUT

The theme song for the 2009 AX which  has a fun instrumental mixed in with a hip hop inspired sound.

The vocals for the song are impressing (which is mostly due to the voices being layered) and all of the members get a chance to sing a bit during the song.

Overall an impressing song with a great sound, although during some parts the sound seems to be repetitive.

blankbar

40 Nanchatte Renai – Aki Urara/Subete wa Ai no Chikara

Aki Urara has an R&B feeling to it mixed in with some ballad and a heavy instrumental which result in a unique song.

The only two members who didn’t get solo lines are Mitsui and Koha, which might be due to the mature feeling of the song, but they do get a chance to do some chorus.

Overall the song is unique and while I don’t usually like R&B songs I have to make an exception this time.

Subete wa Ai no Chikara is the special B-side which was included with the commemorative edition of the single, and it is the opposite of Aki Urara since it features an upbeat ballad feeling.

All of the members get a chance to sing , which is great since the variety of the girls voices adds a unique touch to the song.

Overall the song is also recommendable for everyone since it somewhat brings to mind the upbeat years of Morning Musume.

Reccomended Songs:

  • Never Forget
  • Dekkai Uchuu ni Ai ga Aru
  • Love & Peace! Hero ga Yattekita
  • Koi wa Hassou Do The Hustle!
  • Odore! Morning Curry
  • Sono Bamen de Bibiccha Ikenai Jan!
  • Yowamushi
  • Subete wa Ai no Chikara

Overall

This album is a great addition to any Momusu fan’s collection since it has half of the songs that Momusu has released (at the time of Nanchatte Renai), and even though some fans already have all of the singles I strongly recommend everyone who can to buy the Limited edition since it has a great mini PB which itself is worth the price of the album.

It is common knowledge that most of the time the B-sides have more equal lines, and that holds true for some songs, which is why they are one of the best ways to hear all of the members singing instead of the A-side which is highly influenced by popularity of the members.

The 3 CD’s are a great collection of Momusu songs which don’t get much of a chance to shine, and while some of them are fillers I have to admit that most are great songs which manage to mirror the quality of the singles themselves and in some occasions surpass it.

Hopefully in future concerts we get a chance to hear more of these songs since UFA could make a great concert from these songs alone.

The album is sold out in most places but you can still find the Korean or the Taiwan versions on YesAsia, or if you find a reliable seller you could use Ebay (although make sure to ask the seller if the mini PB is included and whether it is original as well as confirming the seller is rated highly).

This is an awesome review! The only thing I noticed (and I’m sorry for nitpicking) is that Kei’s outfit in the PB is from AS FOR ONE DAY.

That’s ok, I strongly encourage anyone that can to point out any mistakes I might have ^_^

I fixed that part, so thank you for correcting me ^_^

I had no idea what her last single was so I guessed according to her graduation date, sorry X_X

This is a great review, you really go into all the details, which is great for people that are thinking about buying the album.

Oh and I noticed a mistake too~ when you were talking about the album cover, you said ‘the Gokkies’ which is the fifth generation, but you were referring to the sixth generation who are ‘the Rokkies’ xD

Thanks I just corrected it ^_^
After 4 hours of typing it is slightly hard to concentrate on what you are writing, and it is easy to mix up the Gokkies and Rokkies since they sound alike :p

I make sure to go over what I would have liked to see if I was reading the review a year ago (when I was barely starting to listen to H!P), so I make sure to go over everything ^_^

Also thanks for the complement, and if you spot another error please tell me so that I can correct it ^_^

Thank you ^o^

thanks for the review! now i really wish to buy it~ but is it still being sold? and where can i buy it?

I found it on three sites ^_^

HMV (Japan Limited Version)
http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/product/detail/3645285

YesAsia (Taiwan Limited Ver)
http://www.yesasia.com/global/morning-musume-coupling-collection-first-press-limited-edition-taiwan/1021614694-0-0-0-en/info.html

YesAsia (Korea Limited Ver)
http://www.yesasia.com/global/morning-musume-coupling-collection-3cd-booklet-first-press-limited/1021412765-0-0-0-en/info.html

The Korean and Taiwanese versions are cheaper but I have no idea if they are in Japanese (they probably are but I’m not 100% sure). HMV is the best choice so if you can buy it as soon as possible before it runs out \(^o^)/

Is their a difference between then japan and Korean versions? Because I want to get it

1 04 2010
adode136

I would definitely recommend the Japanese version over any other version since it is the original and it’s a lot higher quality. The Taiwanese version is similar in quality as the Japanese version but it probably has some language differences (I’m not sure on that though).

The Korean versions are somewhat cheaper in a sense that they might have a cheaper CD case or somewhat different printing than the Japanese version (I don’t own any Korean versions, but I’m basing this off of what I have read online).

If you want the original then definitely go with the Japanese version, but if you have some kind of a budget constraint then I would suggest either the Korean or Taiwanese versions (leaning a bit toward the Taiwanese version), although I’m not that sure they have the original lyrics in Japanese.

DARC1993

Thank you
and I wish I could buy the Japanese one but cd japan and yes Asia don’t have it anymore and idk what HMV is

btw do u know any were that compares the Japanese version with Korean or taiwan CDs? To see if their will be a big difference

adode136

HMV is extremely reliable, I have ordered about $500 US dollars worth of H!P stuff from them (PBs, CDs, albums) and everything has come in perfect order, so it’s safe to order from there ^_^

I haven’t been able to find anywhere where they compare both editions, the only mentions about the differences is in a comment at Hello! Blog. But most likely the differences are only about the paper they use and in some cases the CD case in the Korean version.

DARC1993

Oh that’s not so much difference !
:)
thank you

Great, great review!!!!

Only thing is you wrote for Koi ING: “I have to admit that it does a good job of showing of everyone’s talent since most of the members get a chance to sing a solo line.” but only three out of the fifteen girls actually get a solo so that’s really the only fault I found in the whole thing.

Thanks for taking all these pictures. :)

Thanks! ^o^

Also thank you for pointing that section out, I just updated it ^_^
I guess after 20 songs I forgot to check out the lyrics at Project Hello and instead relied on what I think I heard ^_^;

Thank you once again! \(^o^)/

Actually, I think the costume Yasuda Kei is wearing came from Happy Summer Wedding. I’ve only seen the PV of it once, so I’m not quite sure, but I’m pretty sure it isn’t from AS FOR ONE DAY.

Jessica

Wait, nevermind, haha It wasn’t from Happy Summer Wedding, after all xD

Oops, sorry xD I just noticed that the costumes were on the album cover… o-O; Haha
